Michael Kandler is anxious to begin his 3rd Season as the Head Baseball Coach at Gulf Coast Community College. Coach Kandler has been coaching now for 21 years. Coach Kandler brings and impressive career record of 385-183. His record at the helm of the Commodores is an impressive 72-28 (.720 winning %), and two state appearances in as many years. Having coached over 40 players who have been drafted, including big-leaguers Bob Wickman and Tim Spooneybarger, Coach Kandler is no stranger to developing big-time talent.

Prior to comming to Gulf Coast, Coach Kandler spent 5 years at Alabama Southern Community College. While at ASCC Coach Kandler's team combined for a record 180-104 and qualified for 4 regional tournaments. He coached 3 all-americans and over 30 players that went on to play at the next level.

Prior to his stop at Alabama Southern, Coach Kandler was the head coach at Pine Forest High School in Pensacola, Florida for six years. His record at Pine Forest was 133-51. His Pine Forest Teams qualified for the state playoffs 5 times, made two final-8 appearances and one final-4 appearance in 1997.

Coach Kandler has also coached at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, the University of California-SanDiego and was the assistant coach here at Gulf Coast from 1991-94.

Coach Kandler brings and intense, enthusiastic approach to coaching baseball. Gulf Coast promises to be a hard-nosed, agressive team under his direction. The Commodores should be a fundamentally sound team that is extremely fun to watch.

Steve Merchant - Assistant Coach

This will be Steve's third season as Assistant Baseball Coach for the Commodores. He will be our hitting instructor and work defensively with the catchers. Steve will also be asked to handle recruiting for the Commodores.

Steve has been coaching baseball for 21 years and has won four State Championships: 2 Dizzy Dean (89, 94), 1 Babe Ruth (91) and 1 USSSA (98); and four World Series: 1 Dizzy Dean (94), 1 CABA (01), and 2 USA Junior Olympic Titles (00, 01). In 1987, Steve began his coaching career with the local American Legion Post 66 Squad. In 1997, Steve created what is now Team Florida USA. TFUSA is a nationally recognized summer baseball squad that has produced major league players such as Scott Kazmir (Devil Rays), James Loney (Dodgers), Chad Billingsley (Dodgers), Zack Grienke (Royals), Billy Butler (Royals), Jerrod Saltalamacchia (Rangers), Mike Pelfrey (Mets), Troy Patton (Astros), Jensen Lewis (Indians), and Ryan Sweeney (White Sox). This will be Steve's 12th season as Director of Baseball Operations and Manager of TFUSA.

Steve is a graduate of Bay High School (1978) and played baseball for Gulf Coast Community College (1979-80).

Blake Mitchum - Assistant Coach

This will be Blake's second season as an Assistant Baseball Coach with the Commodores. He will serve as our Pitching Coach this year. Prior to coming to Gulf Coast, Blake served as the pitching coach for Mosley High School. In 2005 he served as the pitching coach for his alma mater, Valley High School, in Alabama. Mitchum began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Faulkner University in Montgomery, Alabama. As a player in 2001 Mitchum helped lead his Central Alabama Community College team to a national 3rd place finish at the NJCAA JUCO World Series in Grand Junction, Colorado. After his two years at CACC, Blake finished his final two years playing at Faulkner University where he earned his BS in Physical Education.
