Softball Coaching Staff

Susan Painter
Head Softball Coach
Gulf Coast Community College

Played high school softball at Plantation High School before going on to Florida State University, winning the AIAW National Championship in 1981 and 1982. Painter as an All- American in 1982 and 1983 and her team MVP … was the starting pitcher for the Tifton Tomboys and in 1986 was a first-team All-American as the Tomboys won the ASA National Open Major Slowpitch Championship … Hired as head coach at Duluth (GA) High School and taught and coached there for seven years … Came to Gulf Coast in 1993 as a slowpitch coach and took the program into the fastpitch era in 1995 … Was honored with induction into the Florida State University Athletic Hall of Fame and in March of 2005, Painter was recognized by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association for her 500th career win. She begins this season with a sparkling 632-192 overall record here at Gulf Coast.

Bob Thayer
Assistant Softball Coach

Moved to Florida in 1979 and pitched on several Florida state and regional teams including one season with the infamous Clearwater Bombers … In 1975, he pitched against and beat the Nos. 1, 3 and 5 ranked teams in the national tournament and also pitched in the 1977 National Tournament in Springfield, MO.

Was a nine time ASA Southeast Regional participant, a nine-time ISC Southeast Regional champion, a nine-time ASA U.S. National participant, a nine-time International Softball Congress World Tournament player and played on the All-Softball Team in South Wellington, New Zealand.
